[Received the Best Paper Award at the 35th Japan Road Conference.

At the 35th Japan Road Conference (November 1-2, 2023, hosted by the Japan Highway Association), a paper presented by Dr. Bo-Woo Cho, President of MHI, received the Excellence Award and was commended. The award was presented to a paper whose content and presentation were deemed particularly outstanding from the perspective of contributing to the improvement of road technology and the promotion of road projects, taking into consideration originality, usefulness, reliability, clarity, presentation attitude, question-and-answer session, and other factors. Summary of Research Results: We proposed a technique for evaluating the cross-sectional shape and the amount of rut excavation based on 2D images taken by a camera installed inside a vehicle. Field tests showed that the proposed method outperforms the conventional SfM method in estimation accuracy, and the majority of the rut excavation estimation errors were less than 3 mm. Furthermore, the proposed method was also applied to the estimation of pothole depth, and it was confirmed that the relative error to the manually measured value was about 10%. Since the proposed method can be applied not only to cross-sectional profiles but also to longitudinal profiles, it is expected to be utilized in the construction of 3D profiles of road surfaces. (Research theme: Development of a simple evaluation method for rut moat and improvement of productivity of inspection work by automatic calculation of MCI)

GLOCAL-EYEZ passed all inspection criteria for the 2023 Road Surface Condition Automatic Measurement Device Performance Verification Test

(A vehicle equipped with the "GLOCAL-EYEZ" smartphone-based road inspection DX system, jointly developed by Smart City Technology Institute, Inc. and Nichireki Corporation, has passed the "2023 Performance Verification Test of Automatic Road Surface Property Measurement System" (hereafter, Performance Verification Test) conducted by the Public Works Research Institute, Japan. The vehicle equipped with GLOCAL-EYEZ has passed the "2023 Performance Verification Test of Automatic Road Surface Texture Measurement System" conducted by the Public Works Research Center. GLOCAL-EYEZ" is a technology that enables measurement of road surface properties simply by attaching a smartphone to a standard vehicle and driving as usual. Thus, for the first time, a system based on smartphone vibration measurement and image capture without the need for specialized equipment or vehicles was able to pass all three elements of road surface inspection: cracks, ruts, and flatness. All indicators of road surface condition inspection, which were previously measured by a dedicated road condition survey vehicle with an initial cost of about 100 million yen, can now be inspected with high accuracy using a smartphone installed in a single vehicle, and is expected to revolutionize the road inspection industry in terms of efficiency and sophistication. GLOCAL-EYEZ participated in the Road Surface Condition Automatic Measurement Device Performance Verification Test (Rutting Depth)

WE HAVE NOW OVERCOME THE WEAKNESS OF USING A SIMPLE DEVICE AND SUCCEEDED IN QUANTITATIVELY CALCULATING "RUTTED ROAD SURFACE" FROM 2D ROAD SURFACE IMAGES CAPTURED BY AN IN-VEHICLE CAMERA. BASED ON THE RESULTS OF THIS RESEARCH, GLOCAL-EYEZ BECAME THE FIRST TECHNOLOGY USING AN IN-VEHICLE CAMERA TO PARTICIPATE IN PERFORMANCE TESTS IN 2023 IN THE FIELD OF "RUT CLEARANCE". WE WILL WORK ON FURTHER TECHNOLOGICAL IMPROVEMENT AND R&D OF "GLOCAL-EYEZ" TOWARD THE GOALS OF "FROM SIMPLE EQUIPMENT TO RIGOROUS RESULTS" AND "FROM PATROL DATA TO INSPECTIONS," AND PROMOTE THE ADVANCEMENT AND EFFICIENCY OF ROAD MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT THROUGH SOCIAL IMPLEMENTATION OF "GLOCAL-EYEZ.
